Natsu Matsuri - The 3rd Annual Japanese Summer Festival

What is Natsu Matsuri?

Natsu Matsuri (夏祭り) means “summer festival” in Japanese.

It refers to traditional festivals held throughout Japan during the summer months, usually from June through August.

These festivals are a beloved part of Japanese culture, bringing communities together to celebrate, enjoy seasonal traditions, and create memories with family and friends.

A Natsu Matsuri often includes:

Yatai (屋台) — Festival food stalls Visitors enjoy classic Japanese street foods such as takoyaki, yakisoba, karaage, kakigori (shaved ice), taiyaki, and more.

Yukata (浴衣) — Summer kimono Many people wear lightweight summer kimono called yukata while walking around the festival, especially in the evening.

Bon Odori (盆踊り) — Traditional community dancing Communities gather in a circle around a yagura (festival tower) and dance together to music. Bon Odori is connected to Obon, a Buddhist tradition honoring ancestors.

Taiko Drumming Performances(和太鼓演奏) — Wadaiko performances are one of the most powerful and iconic elements of Japanese festivals, including Natsu Matsuri.

Festival games Popular activities include:

● Kingyo sukui (金魚すくい) — goldfish scooping

● Yo-yo tsuri (ヨーヨー釣り) — water balloon fishing

● Shooting games(射的) — shooting game

● Senbon Biki(千本引き) — string pulling game

Lanterns, music, and community gatherings Many festivals feature lantern decorations, taiko drumming, performances, and local groups coming together!
